Trend Alert: The Scandinavian Hairline Technique
By Kristen Linares

In the world of haircolor, techniques continuously evolve, offering fresh ways to achieve precision and artistry. One innovation currently gaining traction is the Scandinavian Hairline Technique. Originating from Nordic countries known for their meticulous attention to detail, this method has made its mark in the world of hair color, particularly for creating natural-looking, seamlessly blended, bright highlights.

What is the Scandinavian Hairline Technique?

This technique is a meticulous approach to applying highlights, designed to mimic the look of natural Nordic blondes. It involves lightening super fine sections of hair around the face.

When to Use It:

This technique is ideal for clients seeking a natural, bright blonde look. It works exceptionally well for those with light to medium blonde hair, as well as lighter shades of brunette. The subtle gradients achieved through this method make it perfect for individuals looking to add dimension to their hair without the harsh lines often associated with traditional highlighting techniques.

Why Use It:

The primary appeal of the Scandinavian hairline technique lies in its ability to deliver a soft, sophisticated result that brightens the hairline, while seamlessly merging the rest of the client’s hair color. By focusing on fine, carefully selected sections of hair, stylists can create a bespoke look that enhances the client's features and suits their personal style. This technique will grow out more gracefully than conventional highlights, reducing the need for frequent touch-ups.

  1. Grip Clips: These ensure clean, manageable sections, crucial for accurate placement of highlights. We love the strong hold that has even tension throughout the entire length of the clip.
  2. Precision Color Brush: This will allow for a detailed application of your lightener on those delicate hairline hairs.
  3. Blending Brush Set: Use these to soften your application and remove any unwanted product from the skin/scalp
  4. Balayage Film: Balayage film helps with separating each hair section, ensuring the color is contained for precise processing.

Step-by-Step Application:

  1. Using a pintail comb, section about a quarter to a half inch maximum, following the natural shape of the hairline.
  2. Apply two sheets of uncut balayage film or a microfiber towel to cover the hair behind the hairline section.
  3. If the hair has been highlighted, apply your lightener only to the root area on the pre-sectioned hairline with the precision color brush. If it hasn’t been highlighted, you may fully saturate the entire section, roots to ends. Be certain to include all baby hairs!
  4. Lay the hairline section away from the face and on top of the balayage film to process.
  5. Using your blending brush, sweep away any lightener application that looks a bit too heavy on the skin and root.
  6. Once processed, determine if a toner is necessary. The goal is to achieve the same tone and level as the lightest highlight in the overall look.
